The purpose of the program is to encourage new commercial or mixed use projects to be built to the United States Green Building Council LEED (Leadership Energy and Environmental Design) sustainable rating system. The LEED rating system is designed to address the goal of providing an integrated approach on the building's impact on the environment from sustainable siting, energy conservation, water efficiency, indoor air quality, and material conservation. Other green certification standards will be acceptable as long as the certification process is done by a third party.

The city of Maricopa has established a Green Building Incentive program for new construction of commercial and mixed use (residential/commercial) projects that are built to the green standard of the United States Green Building Council Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
