The Maricopa Police Department is currently accepting applications for AZPOST certified Lateral Police Officer.
The Maricopa Police Department recruitment and hiring is governed by the Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training board or AZPOST.
Officers hired by the Maricopa Police Department must obtain and maintain a sworn certification from a recognized AZPOST police academy.
Minimum Requirements:
  • 21 years of age
  • No Dishonorable Discharge from the US Military Services
  • U.S. citizen
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license/good driving record
  • Sound physical/ Mental health
  • Minimal criminal activity/no felony convictions
Candidates must meet all background standards established by AZPOST and the Maricopa Police Department including, but not limited to:
  • Written examination
  • Physical fitness assessment  
  • Oral board interview
  • Polygraph examination
  • Extensive background investigation
  • Medical examination
  • Psychological evaluation
Police Department Application Process
Thank you for your interest in a position with the City of Maricopa Police Department. Interested parties may apply to posted openings using the following steps:

National Testing Network
The Maricopa Police Department requires full testing services for this position through National Testing Network, Inc. The cost of the test is $45.00, to be paid by the applicant. To begin the application process and schedule a test, go to National Testing Network, select Law Enforcement and sign up for the Maricopa Police Department.

What to expect at the National Testing Network website:
  • Begin the application process
  • Review all information related to the Maricopa Police Department police officer position, including minimum requirements, salary and benefits.
  • Detailed information about the testing process for both the written and PAT testing.
  • Opportunity to take online practice tests at www.frontlinetest.com.
  • Schedule your own convenient test time. Tests are offered multiple times a week, including Saturdays.
  • Take high quality job simulation tests in a standardized, fair testing environment.

PAT Test:

     1.5 mile run (15 minute max)

     Push-ups: 25 (No time limit)

     Sit-ups: 29 (1 minute max)

 

Important reminders for testing:
  • You must be 21 years of age at the time of the written test.
  • Bring picture ID to the testing site. If you do not have a picture ID, you will not be allowed into the testing site.
  • Do not bring any unnecessary items to the testing center
National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing and Physical Agility Test (PAT) testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the Maricopa Police Department's responsibility and decision making in the testing process. All candidate results are provided to Maricopa Police Department where the final decisions are made.
Upon completion of the entry level exam and PAT testing, all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the Maricopa Police Department. Candidates who attain a passing score on both the entry level exam and the physical abilities test will be placed on the department's eligibility list. Maricopa Police Department will contact candidates on the list and will invite them to continue to participate in other stages of the department selection process.
 
The remaining steps occur after the written and physical agility tests at the Maricopa Police Department:
Background interview
Background investigation
Polygraph examination
Command interview
Interview with the Chief of Police
Psychological exam
Medical examination
Drug screen

 

AZPOST Minimum Qualifications and Automatic Disqualifying Issues:

  1. Be a United States citizen.
  2. Be at least 21 years of age; except that a person may attend an academy if the person will be 21 before graduating.
  3. Be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a General Education Development (G.E.D.) examination.
  4. Undergo a complete background investigation.
  5. Undergo a medical examination.
  6. Not have been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona.
  7. Not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
  8. Not have been previously denied certified status, have certified status revoked, or have current certified status suspended.
  9. Not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale marijuana.
  10. Not have illegally used marijuana for any purpose within the past (3) three years.
  11. Not have ever illegally used marijuana other than for experimentation (more than (20) twenty times total or more then (5) five times since age 21).
  12. Not have ever illegally used marijuana while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
  13. Not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale a dangerous drug or narcotic.
  14. Not have illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past (7) seven years.
  15. Not have ever illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic other than for experimentation (more than (5) time total or more then (1) one time since age 21).
  16. Not have ever illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
  17. Not have a pattern of abuse of prescription medication.
  18. Undergo a polygraph examination.
  19. Not have been convicted of a DUI or have a pattern of frequent moving traffic violations in the past (3) three years.
