The Maricopa Police Department Traffic Unit is comprised of two traffic officers and a Police Sergeant. The traffic unit is responsible for the enforcement of Arizona State traffic laws, vehicle accident investigations and DUI enforcement. Traffic officers operate either police motorcycles, unmarked cars, or fully-marked patrol cars in the course of their duties. The MPD Traffic Unit is dedicated to modifying dangerous driving behavior through education and enforcement. Through aggressive education and enforcement efforts, the goal of the Traffic Unit is to reduce traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities by focusing on the factors that cause them. Some of the driving behaviors and factors that directly contribute to these are speeding, driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, aggressive driving, and lack of attention while driving. The Maricopa Police Department Traffic Unit is also a member of the Pinal County Regional DUI Task Force.
