A regional airport in Maricopa could boost economic development.

Maricopa, AZ (February 21, 2008) – Mayor Kelly Anderson and the Maricopa City Council voted Tuesday, February 19, 2008 to approve the preferred site of a regional airport and move forward with the financial analysis study. The site is located immediately north of SR-238, approximately six miles to the west of SR-347, currently known as Estrella Sailport.

Airports are a growing importance in the regional economy and to local sustainability. Due to the exponential growth in all forms of air passenger and cargo traffic, regional and commercial aviation is, and will continue to be, a major sector in the state, national and world economies. Developing a regional airport in the City of Maricopa will ensure its place in the competitive marketplace.

According to Kevin Evans, Maricopa City Manager, “The action taken by the council this past week has already resulted in inquires from potential business locates that would enhance the economic development of the City.”

Establishing a regional airport in Maricopa is a strategic process that focuses on the future. With population estimates of two million by 2025 in Pinal County, the need for convenient air transportation will be a necessity, and will most likely support multiple airports. The Airport Market Analysis notes that, “adequate general aviation facilities, properly promoted and funded, are necessary to ensure that a community fully participates in today’s economy.” The study has estimated that an airport serving the City of Maricopa could be expected to yield an annual economic impact in excess of $20 million and up to $50 million at maturity and provide for over 50,000 jobs in the area.

The final phase in the Airport Feasibility Study is the financial analysis. Current total cost estimates for the regional airport are estimated at $72.1 million. Of this total cost, the Federal Aviation Administration would supply $66.8 million and the State of Arizona $3.4 million. This would leave $1.9 million to the City. These financial estimates and current economic conditions will be more fully developed throughout the financial analysis phase.

"This study is intended as a tool to assist the City of Maricopa in determining whether to proceed to develop a City owned airport. After the financial analysis phase of the study is completed, and if the City Council decides to go forward, then an Airport Master Plan and Environmental Assessment will be undertaken." City of Maricopa Aviation Consultant and Founder of America West Airlines Edward Beauvais stated.
