Grill & BBQ Safety

Fire on the grill is a great way to enjoy a family cookout but fire in the wrong place can quickly turn dangerous. Follow these tips to keep your barbecue safe all year long.

General Grilling Safety

  • Use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only. Never grill inside a garage, tent, or enclosed patio.
  • Place the grill away from the home. Keep it well clear of siding, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches.
  • Create a “kid-free and pet-free zone.” Keep children and pets at least 3 feet from the grill area.
  • Clean your grill regularly. Remove grease and fat buildup from grates and trays to prevent flare-ups.
  • Stay with your grill. Never leave it unattended while in use.

Charcoal Grill Safety

  •  Light charcoal safely.
    • Charcoal chimney starters can be used with newspaper as fuel.
    •  If you use starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid.
  • Never add fluid to an active fire.  Adding flammable liquid once coals are lit can cause dangerous flare-ups.
  • Store starter fluid safely. Keep it away from heat sources and out of children's reach.
  • Consider electric charcoal starters. Use an outdoor-rated extension cord.
  • Dispose of coals properly. Let ashes cool completely, then place them in a metal container with a lid.

Propane (Gas) Grill Safety

  • Check for leaks each year.
    • Apply soapy water to the hose; bubbles indicate a leak.
  • If you detect a leak:
    • Turn off the gas tank and grill.
    • If the leak stops, have the grill serviced before using it again.
    • If the leak continues, call 911.
  • If you smell gas while cooking:
    • Move away from the grill immediately.
    • Call 911 from a safe distance.
    • Do not attempt to move the grill.
