Bee Safety
The Maricopa Fire/Medical Department has seen an increase in calls involving bees, especially as the weather warms and seasons change. Most bees are harmless if left alone, and many swarms are temporary. Understanding how to respond can prevent unnecessary risks to yourself and others.
If Bees Are in the Area
- Stay indoors. Keep children, pets, and vulnerable individuals inside.
- Close all windows and doors until the bees move on.
- Do not disturb the swarm.
- Do not throw objects, poke the nest, spray water, or attempt to move them.
- Disturbing bees increases the chance of defensive behavior.
- Most swarms are temporary.
- Bees may rest on a tree, wall, or surface for a few hours or even a couple of days before relocating.
- Use caution in sensitive locations.
- Swarms near schools, day care centers, playgrounds, apartments, or trailer parks may require professional removal if they do not leave on their own or show signs of aggression.
Who Handles Bee Removal?
- Property owners are responsible for contacting a licensed beekeeper or exterminator to remove bees on private property.
- The Maricopa Fire Department does not remove hives or swarms and does not provide extermination services.
- MFMD will respond only in special circumstances, such as aggressive bees actively attacking people when the area cannot be safely isolated.
Why We Do Not Kill Non-Aggressive Bees
- Eliminating non-aggressive bees strengthens the more aggressive Africanized population.
- Honeybees play an important role in pollination and the local environment.
- Most swarms are not defensive — they are simply moving locations.
If an Emergency Occurs
Call 9-1-1 immediately if bees are aggressively attacking or if someone is injured, allergic, or unable to seek safety.
