Fireworks Safety
Fireworks are a traditional part of Independence Day and other celebrations, but they can also cause serious injuries. Nationally, around 200 people go to the emergency room every day in the month surrounding July 4 due to fireworks-related incidents.
Fireworks can cause severe burns, eye injuries, and property fires. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public, professional show. If you choose to use fireworks at home, follow these safety guidelines to protect yourself and your family.
Fireworks Safety Tips
Supervision & Age
- Never allow young children to handle or ignite fireworks.
- Sparklers burn at 2,000°F, hot enough to melt metal — they are not safe for small children.
- Always have close adult supervision, even for older kids and teens.
Buying Fireworks
- Only purchase fireworks from licensed vendors.
- Avoid brown paper–wrapped fireworks — these are typically intended for professional displays.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
Safe Handling
- Never place any part of your body over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them from metal or glass containers.
Misfires & Malfunctions
- Never attempt to relight a “dud” firework.
- Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposing.
Fire Prevention
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.
- After fireworks finish burning, soak the spent devices before discarding to prevent trash fires.
- Use fireworks in a clear, open area, away from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
Remember
The safest option is always a public fireworks show conducted by trained professionals.
If a fire or injury occurs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
