2026 General Plan Update:

This update will provide a comprehensive blueprint to guide the city's growth and development over the next 10-20 years. State law requires that all municipalities in Arizona have a general plan, and voters must update and ratify these plans every ten years. Voters last ratified the city’s current General Plan, Planning Maricopa, in 2016, so the city is starting its update process now to prepare for 2026. The update to the city’s General Plan aims to reflect the evolving needs and aspirations of the community, ensuring strategic development that builds upon and furthers the high quality of life in Maricopa.

Key Objectives of the General Plan Update:

  • Community Engagement:
    • Actively and transparently involving residents and businesses in the planning process through community workshops, surveys, and other outreach efforts to gather valuable input and feedback.
  • Economic Growth:
    • Fostering a vibrant local economy by supporting businesses, attracting greater investments, and creating new job opportunities.
  • Infrastructure Improvement:
    • Enhancing transportation, utilities, and public services to support the city's expanding population and future needs.
  • Contextual Development:
    • Promoting growth practices that allow for new economic development opportunities while considerately balancing the preservation of natural resources and environmental hazards.

The city's existing plan can be viewed below but will be updated over the course of the next year.

This site, and all its content, serves as the plan. Navigating the content is made easy by the navigation of major sections at the top of the page. To familiarize yourself with the intent of a General Plan, start in the Introduction section. The core of the document is organized in a comprehensive set of General Plan Elements that provide context, goals, and objectives that look to the near future. Implementation of the plan, responsible parties, and progress monitoring is also provided. Unlike typical static General Plans printed on paper, this site has the advantage of tracking the City's achievements over the course of the plan's lifecycle (at minimum to be updated every 10 years according to state law). Lastly, there are digitized maps that provide the ability to search, zoom, and click for handy information.
