Artists Selected for Wild Horses Public Art Project
Artists Selected for Wild Horses Public Art Project
Published on November 24, 2020
The City is pleased to announce that the artists in the City Manager’s first public art initiative: “Maricopa Wild Horses” have been selected. Thanks to the support of the Cultural Affairs and Arts Advisory Committee (CAAAC), the 49 creative submissions were narrowed down to the top ten finalists.
This cultural project is designed to place large horse sculptures in public places throughout Maricopa. The heavy-duty fiberglass sculptures are 51 in. tall and 84 in. long from nose to tail and will be decorated by the following artists:
Riley Burke
Susan L Cameron
Kristal C Coles
Bonnie Del Turco
Kristal Melody Hoeh
Cindy Koontz
Kimberly Mask
Maria Pour
Cindey Reyes
Mai May Tallwing
These talented and creative artists have until March 1 to complete their works of art according to the design submitted with their application. The horses will be unveiled at a reception on March 16 where the public is invited.
Community Services Director Nathan Ullyot states, “We were excited when the City Manager asked our department to oversee his Arts Initiative and work with the CAAAC to identify an iconic object. The response to the project has exceeded expectations. We hoped to raise enough money to fund five horses. Within weeks we were able to raise enough money for 10. The CAAAC also had a very tough task to narrow the concepts to 10 horses when more than 49 designs were submitted by 28 artists. This is a fantastic step in celebrating and supporting the arts in our community!”
Sponsors include: 911 Air-Repair, Be Awesome Youth Coalition, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of the Maricopa Library, Rose Law Group and State Farm Insurance: Courtny Tyler.
