Connecting Maricopa: Transforming Connectivity for a Growing Community
Published on January 07, 2025
“Can you hear me now? Good!” Changes to the digital infrastructure around the City of Maricopa are underway, and this could mean better cell phone coverage and fewer dropped calls.
A Growing Need for Reliable Connectivity
Maricopa has always been a place of growth and innovation. From its early days of stagecoach stops and railroad routes to the rapidly expanding community we see today, the city has sought new ways to meet the needs of the community. In today’s digital age, reliable connectivity is essential, so the city is working alongside service providers like CenturyLink, Orbitel, and Cox Fiber - who are making significant investments in Maricopa's digital infrastructure - in order to lay the groundwork for a more connected community. The latest to join this initiative is Crown Castle, a national leader in digital infrastructure.
While Crown Castle is not a direct service provider and residents will not be direct customers, they play an important role in constructing and enhancing the infrastructure that supports future connectivity. Crown Castle's shared infrastructure model allows multiple companies to place equipment on the same piece of infrastructure, meaning less work to build a larger network. This not only enhances current connectivity but also makes it easier to develop future digital services as more people move to Maricopa.
Charles Thomas III, Permitting, Utilities, & Engineering Manager with Crown Castle shared, “Maricopa is truly leading the way by adopting innovative technologies that are most beneficial for its residents. While other cities often follow the established paths of larger municipalities, Maricopa is proving itself as a leader in pioneering new approaches to connectivity and community development."

How Maricopa is Leading the Way to a Digital Future
From streamlining the permitting processes to supporting public-private partnerships through easily accessible staff, the city ensures that the infrastructure projects are executed efficiently and effectively. Community engagement is also a priority, with the city actively seeking feedback from residents and businesses to address their needs and concerns.
“We want Maricopa to continue to be a place that residents want to live for generations to come. That means taking an active approach working with service providers and developers alike to make sure our city has the infrastructure to serve our growing population,” shared, Rodolfo Lopez, Director of Development Services. “We also want to make sure the process of building our infrastructure is as minimally invasive as possible.”
A sentiment that is shared by Crown Castle.
“We're committed to making infrastructure upgrades as seamless and efficient as possible. Our microtrenching technology allows for rapid fiber installation, drastically minimizing disruption to residents and traffic and almost eliminating the risk of utility strikes when using our technology,” explains Thomas III. “Maricopa’s forward-thinking approach in embracing this cutting-edge method ensures that the community receives fast, reliable connectivity with minimal inconvenience. As the city expands, Crown Castle’s infrastructure supports additional utility services, facilitating smooth integration and growth."

The Road ahead for a Future-Ready Maricopa
The efforts to upgrade infrastructure across the city shows the city is not just keeping pace with technological advancements but leading the way.
With improved data infrastructure, residents can look forward to faster internet speeds and better reliability for remote work and learning. Additionally, it supports innovation in healthcare, allowing for more efficient telemedicine services and better health outcomes. Enhanced infrastructure also fosters local business development by attracting new businesses and supporting existing ones.
Crown Castle is currently working through phase one of their Small Cell Deployment plan, which is anticipated to stretch into 2025. After installation is complete, they will begin connecting their infrastructure to the service providers present in your home.
