The City of Maricopa is proud to announce that the Maricopa Citizen Leadership Academy has officially been approved by the Arizona Department of Education as a qualifying program for high school students to earn their Seal of Civics Literacy on their diplomas. TheArizona Seal of Civics Literacyprogram recognizes high school students who achieve a high level of proficiency in civics. There are a number of requirements students must perform to earn this seal including completing 3 civics-based programs and least 30 hours of civic engagement. The Maricopa Citizen Leadership Academy now qualifies towards both of these requirements as it is now a qualifying program that offers approximately 10 hours of civics-based learning. "We are thrilled that our Citizen Leadership Academy is now recognized at the state level as a pathway for young leaders to demonstrate their civic knowledge," said Mayor Nancy Smith. "Empowering our youth with the tools to engage thoughtfully and effectively with their government is critical to building a strong, vibrant future for Maricopa." The Citizen Leadership Academy offers participants a behind-the-scenes look at city operations, including sessions featuring topics on economic development, public safety, budge & finance, and more. Students engage in discussions about leadership, governance, and public service, while building the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Enrollment for the next session of the Citizen Leadership Academy will open later this year. High school students interested in earning their Seal of Civics Literacy and becoming more active in their community are encouraged to apply.
