The holiday season is upon us, and as we prepare to gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, the Maricopa Fire/Medical Department wants to emphasize the importance of cooking safely. The kitchen is often the heart of holiday festivities, but it can also be a hotbed for potential hazards. Here are five essential tips to help you cook safely this Thanksgiving:

1. Stay Present in the Kitchen

One of the most common causes of kitchen fires during the holidays is leaving cooking unattended. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the festivities, but it's crucial to stay vigilant in the kitchen. Whether you're roasting a turkey, simmering sauces, or baking pies, designate someone to keep a watchful eye on the stove and oven.

2. Keep Flammable Items at a Safe Distance

The kitchen is often stocked with dish towels, oven mitts, and other flammable items that, when placed too close to a hot surface, can become fire hazards. Keep these items away from stovetops, ovens, and other heat sources. Designate a clear, clutter-free zone around cooking appliances to minimize the risk of accidental fires.

3. Utilize Kitchen Timers and Alarms

With the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, it's easy to lose track of time. Set timers for various cooking tasks to ensure that nothing is forgotten or left on the stove or in the oven for too long. Additionally, ensure that your smoke detectors are in good working order. Test them before the holiday season to guarantee they'll provide an early warning in case of smoke or fire.

4. Thaw Turkey Safely

For many, Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without a succulent roasted turkey. However, improper thawing can lead to bacterial growth. Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, allowing 24 hours for every five pounds of bird. Avoid thawing on the kitchen counter, as this can create an environment conducive to harmful bacteria. Ensure the turkey reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) during cooking.

5. Establish a Kid-Free Zone

The kitchen can be a bustling and crowded space during holiday meal preparations. To avoid accidents, establish a kid-free zone in the kitchen. Keep young children away from hot stoves, sharp utensils, and other potential hazards. This ensures a safer environment for both the little ones and those responsible for cooking the holiday feast.

This holiday season, the Maricopa Fire/Medical Department encourages you to prioritize safety in the kitchen. By following these five tips, you can cook confidently, minimize risks, and focus on creating lasting memories with loved ones.

From our family to yours, have a safe and joyous Thanksgiving celebration!
