The first Regular City Council Meeting of 2025 kicked off on Tuesday with two special proclamations and a celebration. Mayor Nancy Smith, joined by Tamara Washington from Leading Edge Academy, proclaimed January 2025 as “Speak Up, Stand Up, Save A Life Month.” This initiative encourages students to report concerning behaviors and trains adults to intervene, addressing preventable suicides and tragedies in schools.

"This is a critical step in preventing tragedies and ensuring the safety and well-being of our youth," said Mayor Smith. "By working together, we can make a difference in saving lives and creating a safer environment for our children.

Mayor Smith also proclaimed January 21, 2025, as a day of recognition for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, honoring his contributions to human justice, social equality, and service. The community was encouraged to celebrate Dr. King's enduring legacy and his significance in shaping a more perfect union.

Before the meeting, Vice Mayor Henry Wade hosted a celebration in honor of Dr. King, marking the second year the city has commemorated the civil rights leader. The celebration included songs, a poetry reading, and peach cobbler, highlighting the importance of Dr. King's vision for unity and justice.

"Dr. King’s vision reminds us that building a strong community starts with each of us—by coming together, supporting one another, and striving for justice and equality. While this work can begin in City Hall, where we are right now, its impact can extend far beyond as we continue his efforts to build a better, more united society," said Vice Mayor Wade.
