Last Saturday, the City of Maricopa held their annual Shred-a-Thon event at Copper sky. Over 160 vehicles arrived with 8,400 lbs. of paper to shred as well as 1,260 lbs. of food as well as cash donations totaling over $250 for the food bank which was a significant increase over the previous year.

"I am grateful to all of you for making this event successful," said Elizabeth Howell, the organizer of the event. "I'm looking forward to doing it again next year."

Several businesses and individuals from our community came out to assist with the event. AARP arranged for the truck and driver. F.O.R. Food Bank sent a van, staff and boxes to sort the food as donations came in.

Vice Mayor Nancy Smith provided  lunch for the staff and volunteers and Management Analyst for the Community Services Department, Brandie Hughes brought water and signage. Members of our local Maricopa Police volunteers helped with traffic, food donations and shredding as well. The staff at Copper Sky set up tables, chairs,  a canopies, and organized the entire area for use during the event.

Councilmember Bob Marsh assisted with counting  vehicles while his wife Cynthia Marsh and Joan Koczor sorted the donated food items into boxes. Councilmember Rich Vitiello and Ron Smith organized the shredding efforts by emptying boxes of paper into bins.

The event showcased the generous efforts of the community and the team is excited to hold another one in 2022.

Police officers in yellow vests assist at a food distribution table beside a red car. Black crates filled with groceries are arranged on the table.
