Investing in Infrastructure: Garvey Avenue and Beyond
Published on March 28, 2024
The heartbeat of any city lies in its infrastructure, the veins and arteries that keep it thriving and moving forward. Having just marked 20 years as a city, growth in Maricopa will likely continue for many years. So, steps are being taken now to ensure our city can meet the needs for generations to come.
The most recent project are the improvements being made along Garvey Avenue, a vital east-west route intersecting the city's Heritage District.
“As our city experiences growth on the west side of John Wayne Parkway and undergoes significant redevelopment within the Heritage District, the importance of Garvey Avenue cannot be overstated,” Mayor Nancy Smith shares.
With recent essential upgrades such as new pavement, drainage improvements, lighting upgrades, and the addition of multi-use trails, the area is more enticing to foot traffic and business prospects.
“The next step is the new pedestrian overpass that will connect the Heritage District on both sides of the train tracks,” Mayor Smith adds. “This exciting project represents a significant investment in our community's future, promising to elevate not just convenience, but also safety and accessibility.”

Looking beyond Garvey Avenue, the city is poised for further progress with the installation of long-awaited traffic signals. Building on the success of the recent project at Sonoran Desert Parkway and John Wayne Parkway, attention is now turning to key intersections across Maricopa. Honeycutt Road and Rancho Mirage Boulevard, as well as White & Parker Road and Bowlin Road, are among the locations slated for this crucial infrastructure upgrade. Construction will be complete on these two new traffic signals by the end of this summer.
“The installation of traffic signals goes beyond mere functionality; it's a strategic investment in the future of our city,” Mayor Smith explains. “While the upfront costs may be substantial, averaging around $1 million per intersection, the safety for our residents is worth it.”
Each intersection has undergone engineering design work, taking into account various factors such as vehicle speeds, intersection geometry, and existing traffic patterns. This scientific approach ensures that these intersections are not only safe but also capable of accommodating future traffic demands and development.

While Maricopa is making significant strides in improving its infrastructure, the city recognizes the importance of securing funding support from the county, state, and federal levels. Recent successes, such as securing over $1.3 million of federal funding for a box culvert near Desert Sunrise High School, highlight the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in addressing critical infrastructure needs. This funding will help pave the way for drainage improvements in the area of Murphy and Farrell Roads. This will help to maintain proper access to the school, even during monsoon storms that have previously flooded the roadways, causing long delays and detours for school traffic.
As we witness the culmination of these infrastructure projects, let us recognize that they are more than just roads and signals; they are the pathways to progress, connecting our community and paving the way for a brighter future.
