West Pinal County - City of Maricopa Area Transportation Plan

BACKGROUND

Western Pinal County, which includes the City of Maricopa, has been a past, current, and future focus of growth and urbanization. As a result, Pinal County and the City of Maricopa have recently initiated a collaborative effort to study the area and create a plan that updates the City’s current Area Transportation Plan (2015) to ensure the current and proposed transportation systems are aligned with the existing needs and anticipated growth and development – this effort is formally known as the West Pinal County - City of Maricopa Area Transportation Plan (WPMATP).

OBJECTIVES

The primary objectives are to define the current circulation system, evaluate its performance, forecast future needs, and prepare a plan for fulfilling the identified multimodal transportation needs. Specific objectives include:

  • Integrate the transportation system to existing and future land uses.
  • Improve the multimodal transportation circulation of people and goods, using both motorized and non-motorized transportation modes and facilities.
  • Compare future roadway capacity needs to existing roadway conditions to identify future vehicle demands.
  • Perform recommendations to deliver sufficient capacity and multimodal infrastructure to accommodate projected growth conditions.
  • Identify and prioritize future roadway projects for near-term and long-term implementation.
  • Provide a safe, efficient, accessible, cost-effective and context sensitive transportation system.

PLANNING PROCESS

The WPMATP will be formulated through a series of six study phases that include a comprehensive and collaborative public and stakeholder outreach approach held at key milestones throughout the development of the plan.
