Transportation remains one of the most important topics for residents in Maricopa, especially as progress continues on improvements to State Route 347.
While that milestone represents significant progress, city leaders say there is still more work to be done to ensure Maricopa's transportation needs remain a priority at both the regional and state level.
To help advance those conversations, City of Maricopa participated in the Arizona Department of Transportation's (AZDOT) statewide listening tour when it made a stop in Maricopa this week.
"We know that improving mobility throughout our region requires ongoing collaboration. Participating in conversations like AZDOT's listening tour ensures Maricopa's needs are heard as transportation priorities and funding decisions are made,” shared Maricopa Mayor Nancy Smith.
Designed as a small-group discussion, the listening tour allows participants to engage directly with AZDOT staff, share local perspectives and discuss transportation priorities in a collaborative setting.
"Some of the common themes we heard here in Maricopa are better communication from AZDOT, better communication about roadway conditions and State Route 347 closures, upcoming projects, and funding constraints related to transportation improvements,” said Mike Kies, a Strategic Advisor to AZDOT’s Director.
Kies noted that many participants emphasized the importance of finding long-term transportation funding solutions and continuing discussions with state lawmakers about future investments.
Maricopa was also recognized during the discussion for its proactive approach to transportation funding.
"One of the innovative funding approaches in the state is what we call the Maricopa model at ADOT, where Maricopa has raised its own funding and contributed some of the funding toward ADOT projects," Kies said. "That has been a great asset to bringing projects forward in the Maricopa area."
