City Pool Drainage Recommendations
Published on August 02, 2021
The Santa Rosa Wash protects the city of Maricopa in an important way. In fact, all the washes, drainage points, and canals throughout Maricopa play an important role in preventing the flooding of our great city. In the recent few weeks of our monsoon season, we have seen the Santa Rosa Wash in action as the storm water has flowed downstream.
However, the upkeep is difficult as erosion threatens to damage these flood mitigation points. Dan Frank, president of the Maricopa Flood Control District, has said that “The District has spent nearly $500,000 over the last few years making sure the channels are able to perform as needed. We partner with the City and with Pinal County Flood Control District to manage the channels running through Maricopa efficiently.” One of their recent projects repairing the banks of Santa Rosa, caused by residents draining their pool water into the wash, has costed almost $100,000 alone.
City council has sought to curb this danger by enacting new city code that prohibits any person from allowing flooding that causes damage to our washes or other points of flood mitigation. For our citizens, that specifically prohibits the draining of pools into the washes as well as making sure that irrigation systems do not send water over or under the walls into the wash. This will heavily reduce the erosion and damage along the wash.
