City and Ak-Chin Leaders Highlight Progress at Special Meeting

Maricopa, Arizona, March 25, 2026Leaders from the City of Maricopa and the Ak-Chin Indian Community came together Tuesday evening for a special joint meeting focused on collaboration, communication, and shared priorities. The gathering included members of both councils, including Vice-Chairman Delia Carlyle and Councilmember Lisa Garcia, and opened with warm greetings and an exchange of gifts from the Ak-Chin Community.

Maricopa City Manager Ben Bitter provided updates on key city initiatives, including progress toward ambulance service approval, efforts to restore hazardous materials response capabilities, and the hiring of a new emergency manager. A strong emphasis was placed on regional emergency preparedness, particularly floodplain planning which is an issue important to both communities. City leaders proposed a future joint emergency exercise to strengthen coordination.
“This meeting reflects what’s possible when we come together with a shared commitment to our communities,” said Mayor Nancy Smith. “Our partnership with the Ak-Chin Indian Community is built on mutual respect, open communication, and a desire to create a strong, sustainable future and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue working side by side.”
Infrastructure and future planning were also central topics. Updates included the city’s pedestrian overpass project and a regional transportation map highlighting opportunities for collaboration. Ak-Chin leaders encouraged ongoing communication to ensure both communities remain aligned as projects move forward.
Councilmember Garcia shared an overview of the Ak-Chin Community’s current projects, including new housing developments, a wellness center, and continued expansion of its agricultural operations, which span more than 16,000 acres and supply major companies nationwide. She also highlighted upcoming improvements at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The discussion also touched on community events and cultural connection, including potential collaboration for the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary.
The meeting concluded with an open dialogue focused on solutions and partnership. Both groups expressed a shared commitment to continued collaboration, with plans to host a future meeting at Ak-Chin, reinforcing a strong foundation for working together in the years ahead.
