Update: Desert Greens Roadwork Begins June 15
Published on May 28, 2026
UPDATE - 06/08/2026: Construction crews have revised the project's start date. It will be completed in two phases, with phase one starting on June 15 and implementing a closure of Desert Greens between Colby Drive and Smith Enke Rd. At that time, crews will begin constructing the westbound right-turn lane at the Smith Enke-Desert Greens intersection and installing the traffic signal cabinet and meter pedestal.
Phase two is then anticipated to be completed during a two-week window in October. During this phase, contractors will return to install the signal poles and associated equipment. This work will likely be completed during overnight hours to limit the impact on the area.

The city of Maricopa is continuing to invest in roadway infrastructure projects aimed at improving traffic flow, increasing driver safety, and preparing for future demand. One of the latest projects moving into the construction phase is a new traffic signal at the intersection of Desert Greens and Smith Enke Road.
Construction is expected to begin in early June at the intersection located just west of Porter Road. Over the past several years, growth in nearby neighborhoods and businesses has led to a noticeable increase in traffic volumes in the area, creating a greater need for traffic control improvements.
The future traffic signal is designed to improve safety at the intersection, particularly for motorists attempting to turn or cross Smith Enke Road during heavier traffic periods. City officials say the project is part of a broader effort to proactively invest in transportation infrastructure as Maricopa continues to expand.
“This project is a great example of the long-term planning that takes place each year through the city’s Capital Improvement Plan process,” said Maricopa Public Works Director, Keith Brown. “By strategically identifying infrastructure needs in advance, the city is able to prioritize investments that improve safety, enhance traffic operations, and support the daily needs of our residents.”
Because of the intersection’s proximity to Porter Road, the new signal timing will be synchronized with nearby traffic operations to help traffic move as efficiently as possible along the corridor while still prioritizing safety.
In addition to the signal installation, the project will also include construction of a dedicated right-turn lane on westbound Smith Enke Road for drivers turning onto Desert Greens. The added lane will allow Smith Enke Road traffic to continue flowing, while turning drivers await the traffic signal.
To safely complete construction, Desert Greens will be fully closed between Colby Drive and Smith Enke Road during the duration of the project. The closure is anticipated to begin June 10 and continue through early August. Should work be completed sooner, the roadway will be reopened at that time.
Drivers on Smith Enke Road should also expect intermittent lane restrictions that may temporarily reduce traffic to one lane in certain areas during construction activities. Motorists are encouraged to slow down in work zones, remain alert, and plan for possible travel delays.
