Maricopa Historian Honored with W. Paul Shirk Avenue Dedication

A roadway in Maricopa's Heritage District now officially bears the name of Paul Shirk, honoring nearly two decades of service to the community.
The dedication was born from a community request following Shirk’s passing to permanently recognize his extraordinary contributions. When the proposal was brought before the Maricopa City Council, it received immediate support and was approved unanimously, reflecting the profound respect and appreciation for his lasting impact on the community.
Shirk, who passed away in April 2025, made Maricopa his home in 2007 and quickly became a familiar face throughout the community. An educator by profession, he dedicated his retirement to public service, volunteering with organizations including the Maricopa Historical Society, Maricopa Education Foundation and Maricopa Arts Task Force. As president of the Maricopa Historical Society, he became a driving force behind establishing the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center at its current location at Mike Ingram Heritage Park, documenting community stories and ensuring Maricopa's history remained accessible to residents and visitors alike.
"Paul understood that a community's history is one of its greatest assets," said Mayor Nancy Smith. "He dedicated countless hours to preserving the stories, people and places that make Maricopa unique. Naming this street in his honor ensures his legacy will continue to be part of Maricopa's story for generations to come."
In 2024, Mayor Smith recognized Shirk as a Community Champion during the State of the City Address, honoring his extraordinary volunteerism and unwavering commitment to preserving Maricopa's heritage.
Shirk believed history should represent everyone. He championed efforts to recognize the diverse people, cultures and experiences that helped build Maricopa, always encouraging others to become stewards of the community's shared history.
The City of Maricopa extends its gratitude to the Shirk family, the Maricopa Historical Society and the many volunteers who continue Paul's mission of preserving the stories that define Maricopa's heritage.
