The Maricopa Police Department is proud to welcome its newest four-legged team member — K9 Rico — to the force! Rico joins K9 Karma in helping keep Maricopa one of the safest cities in Arizona, expanding the department’s K9 Unit to two active service dogs. Rico is a Dutch Shepheard mix and is just over a year old. While Karma serves as a dual-purpose K9, trained in both suspect apprehension and narcotics detection, Rico’s focus is on drug detection. He has successfully completed his certification in narcotics detection and has already begun joining officers on patrol. Rico is partnered with Officer René Ordoñez, a veteran member of the Maricopa Police Department who stepped up to take on the demanding role of K9 handler. Being a handler is a full-time commitment — the K9 lives with the officer and becomes part of their family, requiring ongoing training, care, and attention both on and off duty. “Rico has already become part of my family,” said Officer René Ordoñez. “I’m proud to serve alongside him. Every day we train and patrol together, our bond grows stronger, and I know he’ll make a real difference in keeping our community safe.” “Our K9s are an incredible asset to our team and our community,” shares Chief Mark Goodman. “Each dog brings unique strengths that enhance our ability to serve and protect. Rico’s specialized skills will support our ongoing efforts to keep drugs off our streets and ensure the safety of our residents.” The addition of a second K9 was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Maricopa Police Foundation, whose fundraising efforts and donation helped the department obtain and equip Rico for service. Their continued partnership and commitment to public safety play a vital role in ensuring MPD has the resources needed to meet the community’s growing needs. As Rico continues his training and settles into his new role, he and Officer Ordoñez are already building the strong partnership that defines successful K9 teams. Keep an eye out for Rico and Officer Ordoñez on patrol and join us in giving a warm Maricopa welcome to our newest K9 officer!
