The city of Maricopa is making significant strides in enhancing the quality and longevity of its road infrastructure through dedicated investments in pavement preservation projects. The costs for these projects are included in the city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), which identifies what needs to be accomplished in the next ten years to improve the quality of life for Maricopa residents. In fiscal year 2024, which begins July 1, 40% of the CIP budget focuses on street infrastructure, such as intersection improvements, the installation of new signal lights, and pavement preservation.

The latest round of pavement preservation work, which commenced earlier this year, includes crack- sealing activities on main roads and in several residential neighborhoods across Maricopa. This crucial maintenance task involves filling cracks, making necessary repairs, and applying specialized asphalt coatings to protect the pavement surface from further deterioration.

“By proactively addressing issues such as cracks and surface deterioration, the city is not only preserving its investment in infrastructure but also reducing the likelihood of more extensive repairs becoming necessary in the future,” says Kieth Brown, Maricopa’s Public Works Director.  “Additionally, smoother and well-maintained roads contribute to improved fuel efficiency, reduced vehicle wear and tear, and enhanced overall quality of life for residents.”

The selection of roads for maintenance is based on their current condition and the urgency of repairs required. Already, areas such as Glennwilde Grove, Rancho Mirage, Tortosa, and Homestead have undergone initial crack sealing treatments, as well as subsequent fog sealing and re-striping to enhance their durability and appearance.

Among the most notable improvements resulting from these preservation efforts are evident along Maricopa's main thoroughfares, namely Porter Road and Smith Enke Road. These vital arteries connect various parts of the city and facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

In the coming weeks, the following projects are slated:

  • Porter Road between Bowlin Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway
  • Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway between Antone Street and Russell Road
  • Hartman Road between Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Sorrento Boulevard
  • John Wayne Parkway between Smith Enke Road and the southern city limit

As the City of Maricopa continues its commitment to proactive pavement preservation, residents can expect to see ongoing improvements in road quality and safety throughout the community.
