Regulated Business License

Effective January 1st, 2019, Business Licenses are no longer required or issued by the City of Maricopa, with the exception of Regulated Businesses*.

 

Regulated Businesses include:

Auctioneers, Pawnbrokers
Tobacco Retail Establishments
Tattoo and/or Body Piercing Establishments
After Hours Establishments
Massage Establishments
Scrap Dealers
Secondhand Dealers

  • This does not eliminate any other city/county/state/permitting requirements. A zoning permit approval is required prior to Regulated Business License issuance. If you have not applied for a zoning permit, please do so first. City of Maricopa Public Portal

A. Any person desiring to obtain a regulated business license must apply to the licensing office. Each application must be accompanied by all required application fees.

B. The annual fee for any license, including a renewal license, under this chapter shall be fifty dollars ($50.00), with each such license to expire one year from the date the license is issued. Any person who discontinues operating a regulated business during the period covered by the current license shall not be entitled to any refund of any license fee. A separate charge for a license shall be paid for each location or separate place of business in which any person operates a regulated business.

C. In order for an application or any renewal thereof to be administratively complete, all fees must have been paid.

D. An application will be granted or denied within the schedule of administrative and substantive review time frames, as established by the licensing office.

E. Fees are not prorated, transferable or refundable unless otherwise provided by law.

F. An application for a regulated business license will not be processed or renewed if the applicant is delinquent in any payment to the city for charges including, but not limited to, taxes, fees, renewal fees or fees incurred as a result of a code violation. The Police Department is open to the public for fingerprinting City of Maricopa Regulated Business Licensing applicants, agents, and employees.

Fingerprinting appointments are required. The applicant needs to call the Police Records Unit at 520-316-6800 option #2 to schedule a fingerprinting appointment. The applicant needs to bring the following to their fingerprinting appointment

  • Money order or cashier’s check $22 (Made payable to Arizona Department of Public Safety)
  • Government issued photo ID (Driver’s license, passport, etc)

Applicants must apply for a Regulated Business License online prior to scheduling a fingerprinting appointment. If assistance is needed to create an account or apply for a license online, please call 520-316-6920 or email dsd@maricopa-az.gov.

AZ Department of Public Safety (DPS) may take up to 8 weeks to process the fingerprints. DPS will mail the results of the fingerprint-based criminal history check to the Police Department. The Police Department will conduct an investigation of the application and background of the applicant and proposed licensee. The Police Department will then recommend the approval or denial of the license (via Smartgov workflow) to the Permit Center. The Permit Center will contact the applicant with the next steps in the regulated business license application process.
