Council Approves Roadside Memorial Marker Guidelines

Wide road with desert landscaping, sparse trees, and a 45 mph speed limit sign. Clear, sunny sky. Calm and open suburban setting.
Following months of discussion and with substantial feedback from the community, City Council recently approved new guidelines regarding roadside memorial markers. The policy, which takes effect on May 18, is designed to afford residents the utmost sensitivity in honoring their loved ones while also holding the City accountable on its responsibility to public safety and maintaining Maricopa's pristine physical environment.

"We empathize deeply with those who have lost a loved one due to an accident on the road and we're grateful to have received so much input from our residents in creating these guidelines."- Mayor Nancy Smith

The policy provides clear direction for how residents can place memorials in a manner which will keep sidewalks passable and roadways free of displays that create potentially dangerous distractions for drivers. Residents will also note the instruction allowing adequate time and means for retrieval of markers which do not meet the guidelines or which are abandoned.
