Jim DeVenezia: A Pillar of Support for Maricopa

When people in Maricopa find themselves in difficult situations, Jim DeVenezia is often one of the first to offer support—not with a badge and uniform, but with a helping hand and a listening ear. As Maricopa Police Department’s dedicated Community Support Specialist, he represents a compassionate and proactive side of law enforcement. His role extends far beyond traditional duties, providing crucial assistance and heartfelt support to victims of crime and community members in need.
"Many times, people get surprised, and they say, 'I didn't know that the police department does stuff like this,” said DeVenezia. “It's a small gesture of just reaching out and just saying, 'I'm here to help' that affects people and has them see the police department in a different way."
DeVenezia’s efforts include pulling together various resources to support collaborative projects with the police department.
"We were able to work with Against Abuse this past Christmas," he recalls. "For the second year, we did the Angel Tree that we had in our lobby, and the gifts that piled up here in our lobby and over at the fire department—it was beautiful."
To provide comfort during difficult times, DeVenezia maintains two cubbies filled with stuffed animals, which officers can give out on calls. This small but meaningful gesture helps bring compassion and calm to those experiencing tough situations.
"A lady recently shared that when she was eight years old, something traumatic happened to her family, and she still cherishes the stuffed animal given to her by a police officer." DeVenezia adds, "I'm convinced it does not take much to have people feel special. It's not that difficult; and being with them in a very difficult time and giving them something to remember, the kindness means more than we could ever imagine."
In addition to his support work, DeVenezia oversees several volunteer programs, including the "You Are Not Alone" (YANA) initiative, where volunteers make regular calls and home visits to participants, ensuring their well-being and providing social interaction.
"It's nothing more than just a reassurance, a hello and a friendly voice," DeVenezia notes.
DeVenezia also serves as the liaison with local homeowners’ associations (HOAs). He emphasizes the importance of the police department as a vital resource for community members, encouraging residents to get to know their officers.
Chief Mark Goodman, a strong advocate of community policing, supports DeVenezia's initiatives.
“Community policing is all about building strong, positive relationships between the police and the community,” Goodman shares. “It means officers work closely with residents to solve problems and improve the quality of life for everyone.”
DeVenezia’s pride in his work and the dedication of his colleagues shines through in everything he does.
"I'm amazed. I'm proud of being able to work with the police department here, because they go above and beyond," he shares.
