New U-Turn Restriction Aims to Improve Safety on John Wayne Parkway
Published on September 21, 2026
Beginning in late September, U-turns will no longer be permitted at most intersections along the John Wayne Parkway corridor.
U-turns can slow the flow of traffic and increase the risk of crashes. This was observed by the City's traffic team both in person and through crash data they reviewed.
“Completing a U-turn takes an extended amount of time, requiring drivers to cross multiple lanes of traffic before they can safely clear the intersection. This can create additional conflict points with oncoming traffic,” explains City Traffic Engineer Monir Zaman. “By eliminating U-turns along the corridor, the City aims to reduce those conflict points, maintain more efficient traffic flow and improve overall safety along the corridor.”
Where will U-turns no longer be allowed?
The restriction will apply to John Wayne Parkway from Cobblestone Farms Drive/Lakeview Drive to Sonoran Desert Parkway – with the exception of Hathaway Avenue due to the already limited access to the adjacent shopping centers.
Drivers who currently use U-turns along this stretch will need to use another intersection or route to reach their destination.
Part of a larger traffic safety effort
The U-turn restriction is one of several traffic improvements being reviewed by the City's Traffic Safety Task Force. The group meets monthly and includes representatives from Police, Fire/Medical, Development Services, Public Works, City leadership and the City's Traffic Engineer.
The City will continue to monitor traffic patterns and crash data after the change is implemented to see how it is working and identify additional opportunities to improve traffic safety throughout Maricopa.
