The City of Maricopa honored many guests, volunteers, and members of the community during this week's Regular City Council meeting. Mayor Nancy Smith kicked the special evening off with a proclamation recognizing Anna Marie from Exceptional Community Hospital for providing care and medical services to over 20,000 patients since their doors opened over one year ago.
"Providing 24-hour healthcare services is critical to our community and having a facility this close to home is vital for our future as a City," said Mayor Smith.
The City of Maricopa Police Department recognized the Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) who make a difference by supporting the department in support services, operations, and community services. More than 50 volunteers contributed over 9,100 hours of service to the department. Their tireless efforts equate to four full-time employees and savings of over $272,000.
"Every volunteer that we have gives their time freely, and we wanted to give our time tonight to say thank you for everything they do," said Jim DeVenezia, Community Support Specialist with the City of Maricopa Police Department.
Finally, Assistant City Manager Jennifer Brown introduced the recent graduates from the Maricopa Citizen Leadership Academy (MCLA) Program. These individuals are part of a long and proud tradition within the City spanning 21 sessions and nearly 350 total graduates. Over the course of four weeks, classmates covered unique topics such as Public Safety, Community, Development, Maricopa's History, and more. The program's goal is to help residents understand the inner workings of their municipal government as they engage directly with elected officials and City staff.
Fourteen participants were recognized for graduating from the program and includes Dawn Bick, Annette Lucas, Sharon Walker, Dominick Miszewski, Molly Spence, Candace White, Matt Garnett, Susan Buonsante, Crystal O'Jon, Kent O'Jon, Shannon Kleinjans, Charlene Dodson, Randy Dodson, Kendall Haley, Charles Green, Councilmember Eric Goettl, Paul Bick, and Jenny Miller.
