This spring, Mayor Nancy Smith put out a call to action for all residents to get involved and be an active part of their community. She asked for each and every one of us to become a Community Champion. So, what does that really mean?

Mayor Smith explained it by using a metaphor from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“[Humans] are called upon not to be like a thermometer conforming to the temperature of society, but [they] must be like a thermostat serving to transform the temperature of society.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

He was arguing that we must change society rather than only be changed by what is happening around us. That means finding ways to get involved and actively participate in shaping the community you want to live in.

“Instead of waiting for solutions, let's roll up our sleeves and be the change-makers,” Mayor Smith shared in her address. “Embrace positivity, get educated, get empowered, and actively engage in crafting the future of Maricopa. Expect more – of yourself and from others. Elevate your thinking and encourage others to join you.”

To kick off the initiative, the Mayor and City Council spotlighted six community champions at State of the City, but we know there are countless more in our great city.

So, we now are launching a way for residents to make nominations and share the spotlight with individuals, groups, organizations and more who are shaping out community.

  • There is no action too small or too big to spotlight, so if you know someone who deserves the praise, let us know!
  • To get you started here are some qualities you may find in a community champion.
  • They show a commitment to serving the community's needs, often volunteering time, resources, or expertise to support local causes and initiatives.
  • They inspire others through their actions, motivating individuals and groups to actively participate in making Maricopa a premier city, creating a ripple effect of positive change within the community.
  • They possess a forward-thinking mindset, introducing innovative ideas and strategies to address challenges and enhance Maricopa's infrastructure, economy, and social fabric.
  • They demonstrate an unwavering passion for Maricopa's growth and prosperity, advocating for initiatives that benefit the community's welfare and development.

We can’t wait to share the stories of Maricopa’s Community Champions.
