The City of Maricopa isexcited to announce the grand opening of the California Zephyr Silver Horizon on Saturday, October 7, at 10 a.m. The community is invite to attend the official ribbon cutting ceremony and take a tour of the recently restored train car. The iconic Silver Horizon California Zephyr first arrived in Maricopa in 2000 and was placed at the southwest corner of John Wayne Parkway and Maricopa/Casa Grande Highway. It was used as the Amtrak ticket station from October 2001 until the spring of 2003. In 2011 and for the next several years, the Maricopa Historical Society continued to open the railcar semi-annually for open houses and public tours. They officiallypurchased the railcar from Pinal County in 2017. During the construction of the overpass in 2019,the railcar was moved to its present location on the northwest corner of Plainview Street and Maricopa/Casa Grande Highway at the former Rotary Park which will have it's new name revealed during the grand opening. The Silver Horizon California Zephyr has been refurbished to display historical information from the inside to include new features such as restored upper level seating as well as a scale model of one of the most popular destinations the train car would travel.
