The newest graduating class of the Maricopa Citizen Leadership Academy was recognized at this week’s City Council Meeting. These dedicated individuals now join 395 other residents who have completed the academy since its inception in 2009.
The academy gives citizens an in-depth understanding of how local government works and empowers them to become actively engaged in the community. Four classes were held once a week in the evening, covering topics including Maricopa’s history, public safety, regional issues, and economic development. Attendees are also required to either attend one City Council or official committee, boards, or commission meeting or perform at least 90 minutes of community service in order to complete the academy. “This was an amazing experience and I really learned a lot attending these sessions. I honestly wish they were longer because I want to learn so much more,” said Devin Pitcher, a recent graduate of the academy. In order to complete the academy, citizens must attend at least 3 out of the 4 sessions offered as well as either complete at least 90 minutes of community service or attend one board, commission, or committee meeting. This was the 24th session of the Citizen Leadership Academy, and it had a graduating class of twenty one individuals. “If you've ever wondered how business choose to come to our city, how many police and fire employees are needed, and the overall financial health of Maricopa, those questions and more get answered at the Citizen Leadership Academy,” said Mayor Nancy Smith.
